At Tinternvale Primary School, our 1/2 program is designed to ignite a love of learning while fostering essential skills in a supportive and engaging environment. With a rich curriculum that encourages curiosity and exploration, our students are equipped with the skills they need for lifelong learning. We focus on developing foundational literacy and numeracy skills through interactive and hands-on activities, ensuring that each child feels confident and capable and can access the curriculum at their point of need.
Our evidence-based literacy program integrates phonics, phonemic awareness, and comprehension strategies to ensure that every student develops the skills they need to become confident readers and writers. Our teachers create supportive and stimulating environments where students explore texts, participate in discussions, and develop critical thinking skills.
Our numeracy program emphasises the importance of understanding mathematical concepts through real-world applications. Students explore and develop their skills in number and algebra, measurement, geometry, and statistics, using a variety of engaging activities that promote problem-solving and critical thinking. Our teachers utilise diverse resources and technology to make learning interactive and relevant, ensuring that each child develops confidence in their mathematical abilities.
Our inquiry-based learning program encourages students to ask questions and explore topics that engage them in learning. Each term, students complete an inquiry project that promotes critical thinking and creativity as they ask questions, conduct research and present their findings in meaningful ways.
Our wellbeing program incorporates the Friendology and Respectful Relationships curriculum, to develop students' social and emotional learning. Students engage in activities that build empathy, conflict resolution, emotional regulation and positive communication. This program helps students build strong relationships, fosters a sense of belonging, and equips them with the skills to navigate social interactions effectively.
Excursions are a key part of our learning experience, providing real-world context to further support classroom lessons. Excursion are linked to our inquiry program and may involve visiting The Melbourne Museum, The Melbourne Zoo, The Melbourne Aquarium, or attending a cultural event. These outings help students connect their learning to the broader community and foster a sense of curiosity and adventure.
The 1/2 sports program provides opportunities for our students to engage in physical activity and teamwork with peers outside of their classroom. Through various sports and games, students develop their motor skills, learn about fair play, and enhance their physical fitness. This program promotes a love for movement and encourages students to embrace an active lifestyle.
We foster a sense of community through our buddy program, which pairs Year 1 students with older peers. Our buddy activities encourage mentorship and friendship, enabling younger students to develop confidence and social skills while learning from their older counterparts. Activities range from shared reading sessions to fun outdoor games, creating lasting bonds and a supportive school environment.
